RTC to retrofit 30 buses with CNG kits to check pollution

HYDERABAD: Under immense pressure from various authorities to reduce its carbon footprint, the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) has now decided to retrofit 30 buses from its existing fleet with CNG kits.

These buses are part of the 300 CNG vehicles that were bought by the corporation in 2010 when it drew up massive plans to `go green'.

Later, many of them were converted into diesel buses after the plan failed to take off. Primary reason for the failure: Acute shortage of compressed natural gas (CNG) in the handful of outlets around the city .
"About 250 were kept unused for a year and then many were rounded off to Vijayawada where the supply was better. Among them, 30 buses were converted into diesel vehicles at a huge cost. These buses will now be retrofitted back with CNG kits," said Jeevan Prasad, chief traffic manager (Greater Hyderabad zone), TSRTC.

The cost this time, for retrofitting these buses, will be about Rs 5-6 lakh per bus. According to sources, the move follows repeated instructions to TSRTC by the Pollution Control Board (PCB) and traffic police to check pollution.

Incidentally, stuck with an ageing fleet of 3,819 buses, the corporation has suffered cumulative losses of Rs 3,000 crore over the years.

But while some hail the move, some other department insiders allege that the idea to shift back to CNG has been thrust upon the corporation by the Bhurelal Committee, which had made this suggestion to the PCB, to arrest vehicular pollution. They point out, how the move is both highly expensive and of no significance to the end user.

"The engines of these bu ses are different and can be modified to perform at par with diesel vehicles but not only are the buses costlier, CNG is costlier than diesel. While diesel-run buses cost between Rs 22 and Rs 27 lakh each, CNG buses range between Rs 31 and Rs 32 lakh. We cannot have CNG buses just because someone is thrusting the idea on the corporation. It has to have some benefits for users and some incentives for the corporation too.We will retrofit or buy new CNG buses if PCB extends some grant," explained a senior official.

Experts also add how a small-scale change is unlikely to help improve the ambient air quality of the city.

At present, there are only 120 CNG buses operating in depots such as Shamirpet, Dundigal and Medak.

TSRTC Re-organizes Routes to Increase Revenue in Telangana

Hyderabad : The Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) officials have now taken up the exercise of rescheduling of routes in new districts with an aim to increase 5 per cent occupancy ratio, which could result in increasing revenue of Rs 200 crore.

The State-owned corporation presently operates in 3,717 routes connecting 456 mandals and 43 divisions in the erstwhile ten districts. The corporation officials are of the opinion that the new districts would increase the revenues if the services are planned as per the needs of the people by operating buses in new areas.

Sources said the divisional, regional and depot managers have been asked to send reports after examination of new profitable routes. Presently, the corporation is unable to provide bus services to over 1,300 villages for various reasons like bad roads and other problems. As a result, the travellers in villages opt for private operators like autos, maxi-cabs and other means.

The change in the district borders has also increased the rush in buses as the office-goers have been travelling about 30 to 60 km to and fro directions. There had been requests from the district collectors and various heads of the government departments to operate buses for their staff, said a senior official. The occupancy ratio during morning and evening had increased because of the new district offices, added the official.

Sources said primarily, the officials had decided to start at least 150 new routes on Hyderabad-Warangal, Nizamabad, Karimnagar and new districts like Yadadri, Bhadradri, Shamshabad and other mandals in the districts.

To begin with, the officials are planning to run buses to new mandals, division headquarters and in the later stages, buses would be operated from Hyderabad to other district headquarters. The corporation is aiming to increase the occupancy ratio by 5 per cent by operating buses to new areas.

Presently, the occupancy ratio in the buses is 70 per cent and the officials want it to be 75 per cent. The five per cent increase in operational ratio would result in addition of Rs 200 crore as revenue to the corporation.

The corporation operates 10,733.80 lakh kilometers per annum with a fleet of 10,329 buses in 95 depots across the State. On an average, an RTC bus runs 30.50 lakh kilometers in the State every day.
